Community Mobilization Project

Preventing Human Trafficking and Empowering Local Government

The initiative to “Prevent human trafficking through community mobilization and capacity enhancement
of local government” is a significant project funded by the Australian Government, Department of
Foreign Trade and Affairs. This crucial undertaking is aimed at addressing and mitigating the alarming
issue of human trafficking in specific regions of Nepal. The primary focus areas include Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli, and Ramechhap districts in the Bagmati Province, along with the Kailali district in the Sudurpaschim Province, where a Transit Home has been established. Maiti Nepal, a renowned non-governmental organization with a proven track record in combating human trafficking, forefronts this initiative. Their expertise in the field, coupled with a commitment to the cause, positions them as a key player in the successful execution of the project.

Major Achievements

  • Established a Transit Home in Tikapur, Kailali District, Tikapur Municipality-9, Jhunga.
  • Conducted 13 semi-annual interactions with judicial committees, addressing laws and policies in Sindhuli, Ramechhap, and Kavre Districts.
  • Held a workshop on Access to Justice for Human Trafficking Survivors in Kathmandu, attended by key figures from 10 districts, coordinated with Attorney General Nepal and Nepal Police.
  • Organized 27 events, including Formation and Semi-Annual meetings with LCCHT, focusing on districts like Sindhuli, Ramechhap, and Kavre.
  • Facilitated a two-day Inter-Municipal Coordination meeting in Kathmandu with participants from 15 municipalities across Kavre, Ramechhap, and Sindhuli Districts.
  • Launched a music video, “Hidha Maya Hidha,” by Maiti Nepal with renowned artists to raise awareness about human trafficking.
  • Produced PSAs/jingles against human trafficking, broadcasted on local radio/FM stations in Kailali, Kavre, Ramechhap, and Sindhuli Districts.
  • Conducted three-day Training of Trainers for Maiti Nepal Human Rights Volunteers in Kathmandu.
  • Developed and distributed 54,000 copies of IEC materials against GBV during mass awareness campaigns in more than 10 districts including project districts.
  • Celebrated 30 events in Sindhuli, Kavre, and Ramechhap Districts on the national anti-human trafficking day and during the 16-day campaign against GBVs.
  • Organized 13 Municipality Project Advisory Committee (MPAC) Meetings in Ramechhap, Kavre, Sindhuli, and Kailali Districts to share program details and feedback from local governments.
