MAITI NEPAL'S

Information Desk For Promoting Safe Migration

At Maiti Nepal, we recognize the growing demand for foreign employment, driven by poverty, limited opportunities, gender inequality, domestic violence, and the pursuit of better livelihoods. Unfortunately, this surge in migration often places individuals, particularly women, at risk of sexual and labor exploitation throughout the migration process—from departure to arrival at their destination. Nepali women migrant workers, in particular, are vulnerable to severe forms of exploitation abroad.
To address these challenges and promote safe migration, we have set up three Information Desks in key locations: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Passport Department; Thankot in Kathmandu District; and Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchowk District. Through these desks, we actively work to raise awareness about the risks of unsafe migration and empower individuals with the knowledge needed to protect themselves. These efforts reflect our commitment to ensuring safer migration journeys and protecting the rights of vulnerable migrants.

Maiti Nepal’s Information Desk at the Department of Passport,Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)

We operate an information desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a clear mission: to educate female migrant workers about the risks of unsafe migration and human trafficking. Our team is committed to raising awareness about the various forms of exploitation that may occur under the guise of job opportunities. However, our purpose is not to deter individuals from seeking foreign employment but to guide them toward safe and legal pathways.

This year, our dedicated team provided essential information to 21,196 individuals, emphasizing safe migration practices and the potential risks associated with foreign employment. Among them, 1,105 individuals were aged 16–18, a demographic of particular concern as the growing number of young applicants for passports signals increased vulnerability to trafficking.

By strategically positioning this information desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we aim to reach young girls and women at a critical juncture, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the migration process safely.
